One of the areas that creates conflict for many people, especially those who are on a spiritual path, is the imagined conflict between being spiritual and having an abundance of material possessions. Imagined; meaning, there does not need to be any conflict.

Here’s a story with a valuable life lesson:
It was a wonderful weekend of lectures, meditation, and quiet walks through the woods, surrounded by more than a hundred spiritual people. On Saturday morning, a small group of us stood outside the main building waiting for the conference leader, a deeply spiritual person.

As his big, black limousine pulled into the driveway, I began to see the relationship between being spiritual and having an abundance of material possessions. When he got out of the limo and stopped to play with the small children before going inside, I realized that while he didn’t need the limo and surely never demanded one, when it was offered to him as a display of respect and admiration, he simply said “thank you.”

He did not say “No, I’m a spiritual person. I’ll walk or take the bus.” He simply saw it for what it was, a method of transportation – albeit a very nice one – and humbly accepted the gift. The powerful lesson in detachment was clear to me.

So, do you enjoy material things in life? You should. Should they be all that matters to you? No they shouldn’t. Remember it is the worship of money that is “evil” not money itself.
